The Ammonium Sulfate Market will remain closely tied to agricultural productivity. FAO data show that global agricultural use of nitrogen fertilizers reached 108 million metric tons in 2022. Plant nutrients generated $563.7 million in sales during 2025, equal to 37% of the company’s total revenue. The company plans to convert around 75% of its ammonium sulfate production into granular form by the end of 2026. Its competitive position is supported by domestic manufacturing, rail access, customer relationships and a lower dependence on imported finished fertilizer.
Sinopec
Sinopec participates through a broad network of refining and chemical subsidiaries. Its ammonium sulfate supply is closely linked to caprolactam, coke processing and other integrated chemical operations.
The company’s main advantage is industrial scale. It operates caprolactam assets in major chemical clusters and has access to China’s export ports, fertilizer traders and bulk shipping infrastructure. GSFC’s position is strengthened by backward integration. A new sulfuric acid facility commissioned on January 7, 2026, added close to 200,000 metric tons per year of internal capacity. The plant supports ammonium sulfate and ammonium phosphate sulfate production while reducing exposure to externally purchased sulfuric acid.
The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore
The Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore, or FACT, is a leading supplier in southern India. Its ammonium sulfate business is closely connected to rice, sugarcane, banana, vegetable, tea, coffee, pepper and other plantation crops.
FACT has an installed ammonium sulfate capacity of approximately 225,000 metric tons per year. It produced a record 250,578 metric tons during 2024–25, while sales reached 266,683 metric tons, compared with 222,349 metric tons in the preceding year. Its distribution strength in Kerala and nearby states gives it a defensible position in sulfur-responsive crops.
Fertiberia
Fertiberia competes through a broader plant-nutrition portfolio rather than bulk ammonium sulfate scale alone. It supplies solid crystalline grades as well as liquid ammonium sulfate solutions for direct soil application, fertigation and industrial dosing.
Its competitive advantage lies in formulation flexibility and access to European specialty-fertilizer channels. The company can position ammonium sulfate as part of a wider nitrogen-and-sulfur program rather than as a standalone commodity. Regional Landscape and Adoption Outlook
United States
The United States is a mature but commercially attractive market. Demand comes mainly from corn, wheat, canola, cotton, pasture and soybean systems where sulfur application has become more important.
The country imported around 1.07 million metric tons of ammonium sulfate worth nearly $360 million in 2024. Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Nigeria and Germany were major suppliers. This import volume shows that domestic production alone does not fully cover agricultural and blending demand.
Domestic funding is supporting supply security. In September 2024, the US Department of Agriculture awarded AdvanSix an approximately $12 million grant. The related investment is designed to add close to 200,000 tons per year of granular product and improve rail and truck loading capability.
Growth through 2035 will be moderate in volume but stronger in premium granular grades. Environmental rules will also encourage soil testing and calibrated nutrient application rather than unrestricted fertilizer use.
Europe
European demand is concentrated in cereals, oilseed rape, potatoes, sugar beet, grassland and high-value horticulture. Germany, France, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom represent important agricultural consumption markets, while Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany serve as production and logistics hubs.
The regional supply base is being reshaped. European caprolactam and ammonia plants face high energy, carbon and maintenance costs. BASF has closed its ammonium sulfate nitrate facility and is completing the closure of its Ludwigshafen caprolactam operation. UBE is also reducing commodity chemical production, while DOMO Chemicals and Fertiberia retain relevant regional positions.
Regulation creates a separate opportunity. EU fertilizer rules permit qualified high-purity ammonium and sulfate salts recovered from waste streams to enter the single market. This supports ammonia stripping, manure processing, wastewater recovery and industrial gas-scrubbing projects.
Europe is therefore expected to record limited conventional volume growth but stronger activity in recovered, traceable and lower-carbon grades.
China
China is the world’s main production and export center. Supply is generated through caprolactam production, coke-oven recovery, direct synthesis and emission-control systems installed at industrial facilities.
Chinese customs data indicate that ammonium sulfate exports reached roughly 17.7 million metric tons with a value of about $2.54 billion in 2024. This scale gives Chinese suppliers considerable influence over bulk crystalline pricing in Brazil, Southeast Asia, Turkey and other import-dependent markets.
Sinopec and numerous provincial chemical producers benefit from integrated feedstocks, industrial clusters and access to bulk ports. Domestic fertilizer demand remains meaningful, but export markets absorb a large part of incremental production.
Growth will remain export-led. However, plant closures, environmental inspections or changes in export economics can quickly alter international availability.
India
The Indian market is expanding from a smaller base. Sulfur depletion in intensively cultivated soils, plantation agriculture and rising awareness of balanced fertilization are supporting consumption.
The government reported that ammonium sulfate consumption increased by nearly 60,000 metric tons during 2024–25. Domestic suppliers include FACT, GSFC, steel plants and smaller chemical producers.
Infrastructure investment is improving local production economics. GSFC’s new sulfuric acid plant will supply feedstock for ammonium sulfate and other sulfur-containing fertilizers. FACT has also achieved production above its stated installed capacity through operating improvements.
India is likely to be one of the faster-growing Asian markets through 2035. Rice, sugarcane, oilseeds, tea, coffee, vegetables and plantation crops will provide the strongest demand base. Government fertilizer policy will continue to affect producer margins, inventory placement and retail affordability.
Japan
Japan has a mature fertilizer market with limited cultivated land and high application discipline. Ammonium sulfate is used in rice, vegetables, tea, horticulture and selected industrial applications.
The country imported approximately 50,174 metric tons, valued at $12.0 million, in 2024. China supplied about 38,654 metric tons, while Thailand supplied roughly 11,098 metric tons.
The outlook is low-growth. Local caprolactam restructuring may reduce domestic co-product availability, increasing dependence on China and Southeast Asia. Specialty, soluble and high-purity grades will perform better than standard bulk fertilizer.
South Korea
South Korea functions as both an importer and an exporter. It imported around $18.6 million of ammonium sulfate in 2024, primarily from China. During the same year, it exported approximately 107,219 metric tons, mainly to New Zealand, the United States and Vietnam.
These two-way flows reflect differences in grade, contract structure and production route. Domestic chemical and steel facilities can generate co-product material, while imported crystalline grades may serve particular fertilizer or industrial requirements.
Demand growth will remain modest. Export competitiveness will depend on operating rates in the steel, coke and chemical industries.
Middle East and Turkey
The Gulf market is smaller than the regional urea, phosphate and compound-fertilizer industries. However, ammonium sulfate is relevant in Turkey, parts of the Levant, Saudi Arabia and irrigated agricultural areas with sulfur-deficient soils.
Turkey is the clear regional import anchor. It imported ammonium sulfate worth approximately $150.7 million in 2024, including about 714,043 metric tons from China. Saudi Arabia imported roughly 12,475 metric tons, while Israel imported approximately 16,630 metric tons.
Turkey will deliver the strongest regional growth because of its fertilizer-distribution network and large cereal, fruit and vegetable sectors. Gulf countries have access to ammonia and sulfur feedstocks, but ammonium sulfate remains secondary to urea and phosphate investments.

Granular conversion and logistics
Converting fine crystals into durable granules offers one of the clearest commercial opportunities. Granules are easier to blend, store and apply. Investments in rail loading, port handling and regional warehouses can further reduce delivered costs.
