During the two years from 2013 to 2014, 2.6 million men and 2.9 million women in Sweden’s adult population visited a dentist at least once each. Around 20% of all Swedish women in their 50s were toothless in 1968. Anette Wennström, a Swedish dentist, claims that over the years, oral health in Sweden significantly improved. Because of the widespread use of fluoride and advanced dental health programs by 2004, the majority of middle-aged Swedish women were able to grin using their teeth. Wennström discovered that only 0.3% of Swedish women over 50 in 2004 were toothless.
A frequent ailment that affects the tissues around your teeth is gum disease. Avoiding treatment can result in gum recession and even tooth loss. It causes swelling, gum redness, and occasionally pain. Even just a tiny bit of gum disease affects 90% of persons in the UK. However, gum disease can be avoided by following a proper oral hygiene regimen that includes frequent brushing, dental checkups, and hygienist visits.
Since 1985, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare has annually collated data on apparent caries at specific ages (three, six, twelve, and nineteen). In Sweden, 67 percent of children aged 12 and under and 72 percent of children under 6 had no caries, per the most recent statistics for the year 2019. Free dental treatment for kids and teenagers aged 0 to 19 and the way dental services are organized—where county councils are in charge of overseeing the provision of dental care to kids and teenagers—are also important factors. In Sweden, children and teenagers receive routine dental exams in about 95% of cases. The Public Dental Service or contracted private practitioners provide the dental services.
The Swedish Social Insurance Agency manages and offers a wide range of financial assistance for dental care in Sweden (SSIA). Implant-supported restorations were legally recognized as a medical procedure in 1986, at which point the SSIA began to pay for them. This reimbursement structure was changed as of July 1st, 2002, and the federal subsidy for implant-supported restorative therapy for patients under the age of 65 was enhanced. Therefore, regardless of the size of the implant-supported restoration, out-of-pocket costs for participants in this age group should not go over SEK 7,700 (+ lab fees). Patients under the age of 65, however, were required to pay up to half of the real costs.
